5 Things to Check When Your Dryer Won't Heat

Is your dryer running but not producing heat? Here are 5 things to check before calling for service.

A dryer that runs but doesn't heat is one of the most common appliance problems we see. Here's what you can check before calling us.

Step 1: Check the Power

Electric dryers require 240V power. If one leg of power is out, the dryer will run but won't heat. Check your circuit breaker.

Step 2: Clean the Lint Filter

A clogged lint filter restricts airflow and can cause heating issues. Clean it before every load.

Step 3: Inspect the Vent

A blocked dryer vent is a common cause of heating problems. Check for lint buildup and kinks in the vent hose.

Step 4: Check Gas Supply (Gas Dryers)

If you have a gas dryer, ensure the gas valve is fully open and the pilot light is lit (on older models).

Step 5: Listen for the Igniter

On gas dryers, you should hear a clicking sound when the igniter activates. No click might mean a faulty igniter.

When to Call a Pro

If these steps don't solve the problem, you likely have a faulty heating element, thermal fuse, or thermostat. These repairs require professional service.
